Igniting Sparks at the Magic 2014 Celebration
If you are anything like me, a casual magic player with a healthy dose of freebie lovin', then you would have seen yourself hangin' out at your nearest hobby store celebrating Magic: the Gathering much like the rest of the community. If you who haven't attended a Magic Celebration before, it is a special event geared towards introducing new players and showing them how to play.
Each Magic Celebration player receives one Magic 2014 Core Set booster pack and achievement card. After opening your booster pack, you'll choose a Magic 2014 Core Set Sample Deck to add cards from your booster pack to.
I wanted to unwind this weekend and take some stress away. Of course, getting free stuff was also at the center of my mind. So at an invitation from friends, we headed over to Sta Rosa, Laguna for appreciably fresh air and some fun gaming.
We arrived at PC Butlers and was enthusiastically welcomed by Lawrence. There already were a few players gathered around to register and we managed to fit ourselves in. I was given an M14 booster pack from which I was asked to choose a color from the cards I wanted to play. The booster pack I got screamed blue. I instead went for that predatory looking Garruk sample deck box. I am a die-hard green mage, after all. The guys and I then went to one of the tables to sleeve up and shuffle. A few shared stories, some pairings, and three best-of-three matches later and stress build up instantly gone!
It was refreshing to play without the pressure of winning and with cards you wouldn't normally use even if your life-counter flipping days depended on it. The sight of new people experiencing Magic and having fun brought me back to when I just started playing MTG. I'd spent most of those days with friends simply learning the game, enjoying the game, sharing the game, and ultimately having a blast of a time. Okay, I still do have that. It's not quite the same, though. And no, I am not about to cite age nor anything else for that matter. Maybe, I'd go for innocence. *grins*
We spent the rest of the day playing a few rounds of Commander while the others were at the Standard side event. I occasionally look over the on-going Magic Celebration pods. There were a few kids and even a couple of ladies getting into the game. It sure looked to me some new sparks have been ignited.
