Blog Action Day 2009 - Climate Change

We here in the Philippines have been taking the brunt effects of climate change for the last few years. The super typhoons Ondoy (Ketsana) and Pepeng (Parma) are not just a great indication of how far we've gone against mother nature; but, it already is a true testament that it is here. The climate may indeed have changed for the worse.

Unfortunately, many Filipinos are estranged to the subject. No. Many people around the world are. We go shocked and devastated by massive floods and landslides happening at a faster pace and at a wider expanse than generations before us have ever encountered. Yet, how many of us have taken the necessary steps to better our situation?

The floods that ravaged Metropolitan Manila may have happened in a matter of minutes. But, the causes didn't happen overnight. The continuous deforestation of nearby mountain sides and the ever growing problem of garbage clogging our waterways have definitely played a huge part in the recent catastrophe. Their effects go beyond flooding and landslides, though. They have also contributed to global warming.

What can be done? What needs to be done?

We already know there is something terribly wrong with the environment. If you haven't felt it or at least heard anything extra-ordinarily uncanny from anywhere, well now you do.

Let us not only decry about our governments lack of action.
Let us not only call on them for stronger political will to effect positive changes at environment policies.

Let us too learn about the greater effects of climate change.
Let us take action and also do our part.

Today is Blog Action Day 2009!

Unite with the rest of the world in posting and sparking discussion around an issue of global importance: Climate Change.
